REPORT T0: Development & Technical Services Committee
DATE OF MEETING: January 25, 2010
SUBMITTED BY: John McBride, Director of Transportation Planning
PREPARED BY: Jeramie Lewis, Traffic Technologist
WARD(S) INVOLVED: West -Victoria Park
DATE OF REPORT: January 4, 2010
REPORT NO.: DTS-10-018
SUBJECT: ON-STREET PARKING - GILDNER STREET
RECOMMENDATIONS:
That parking be prohibited at anytime on the west side of Gildner Street from a
point 46 metres north of York Street to a point 17 metres north thereof; and
further,
That parking be prohibited at anytime on the west side of Gildner Street from Park
Street to a point 80 metres south of Park Street; and further,
That the Uniform Traffic By-law be amended accordingly.
BACKGROUND:
Transportation Planning has received a request to review the existing on-street parking
regulations on Gildner Street. The request cited concerns about vehicles parking along
the west side of Gildner Street in certain areas, and this parking makes accessing
residential driveways extremely difficult and unsafe.
REPORT:
At the present time, on-street parking is permitted on the west side of Gildner Street
between York Street and Park Street "By Permit Only" between 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.
Monday to Friday. During all other periods, parking on the west side is permitted for a
maximum period of three (3} consecutive hours. Parking is prohibited at anytime on the
east side of Gildner Street. These regulations are outlined in the City of Kitchener
Uniform Traffic By-law No. 2007-138.
3-1
In order to address this request, Transportation Planning is proposing to prohibit on-street
parking at anytime on the west side of Gildner Street from a point 46 metres north of
York Street to a point 17 metres north thereof, and from Park Street to a point 80 metres
south of Park Street, as per the attached plan. This will allow for improved access to
and from residential driveways. However, please be advised that a parking prohibition
would result in the loss of approximately five (5) available on-street parking spaces.
The entire block of Gildner Street was reviewed specifically for driveway accessibility.
The recommended prohibited parking areas will address the locations that currently
experience driveway access issues.
COMMUNICATIONS:
Transportation Planning mailed out a letter indicating the intent to prohibit parking in the
areas mentioned, with a time line for response. No concerns were raised by the
residents of Gildner Street.
FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS:
The approximate cost for sign installation on the street will be $400. These funds will be
procured from the existing sign maintenance budget.
