SUBJECT: APPOINTMENT TO HERITAGE KITCHENER -
REPRESENTATIVE OF THE UPPER DOON HERITAGE
CONSERVATION DISTRICT
RECOMMENDATION:
That Ann Oja, be appointed to Heritage Kitchener as the Committee’s representative from
the Upper Doon Heritage Conservation District for a term expiring November 30, 2010.
BACKGROUND:
Section 2.e) of Council Policy I-110 (Heritage Kitchener - Terms of Reference) sets out that the
composition of Heritage Kitchener should include one representative for the Upper Doon
Heritage Conservation District (HCD). It is this person’s role to work with staff on issues
impacting that District and provide comments on behalf of that area’s residents. However,
during Council’s 2009 advisory committee appointment process no applications were received
to fill this sector specific position.
REPORT:
Through a referral from Regional Councillor Jean Haalboom, Ann Oja has submitted an
application to be appointed to Heritage Kitchener as its representative from the Upper Doon
HCD. Ms. Oja meets all eligibility requirements provided for in Council Policy I-63 (Appointment
to Boards & Committees) and has been a member of the Society for the Preservation of Upper
Doon (SPUD) since 2005. In addition, she has volunteered as a guide for Doors Open Waterloo
Region and as a spokesperson at the annual Heritage Showcase since 2006. In her application
Ms. Oja notes that as the owner of a heritage property, she has developed knowledge and skills
in historic building maintenance, renovations and restoration.
