The presentation that will be given at the February 18, 2010 Environmental Committee meeting will report on the findings of the evaluation. -------------------------------- Working with KW Hydro, staff have recently installed a new type of street light as part of a pilot program to investigate their effectiveness and potential savings to the City. Existing street lights use high pressure sodium (HPS) as a light source. While they are reasonably energy efficient, they give a yellow light which can affect colour recognition and visual comfort. They also need to be relamped about every 5 years. We have chose Brookfield Cres off of Rittenhouse Rd as the pilot location and have installed 6 induction lights and 5 LED lights. Induction lights are a form of flourescent lights. They both produce a white light, which gives better colour recognition, they will use even less energy than HPS lights and the maintenance costs should be considerably less. LED lights claim to have a 50,000 hour life span which equates to about 10 years life and the induction lights have a claimed 100,000 hour life span or about 20 years before relamping. They also are produced in a full cutoff design which reduces the night sky impact. Through KW Hydro a number of field measurements will be taken to verify their performance. We will also be doing a number of surveys with the residents to get their input on both types of lights compared to the standard HPS lights. After the evaluation period and a full technical review, a report will be brought to Council in the fall outlining the results and potential use of this technology for new installations and the potential for retrofit of existing lights. I wanted you to be aware of this pilot project, so that if your interested, you have the opportunity to view these lights at night in a residential setting. I would also be interesed in your opinion of these lights if you get a chance to view them. Please forward this information to others that you think might be interested. If you have any questions, please give me a call. Thanks.
