Our ask: • We would like the City of Kitchener to take a stand and increase their plant-based purchases by at least 50% by the end of this year. GHG Emissions and Environmental Breakdown related to Animal Agriculture: •Methane and nitrous oxide, which heat the planet between 25 and 300 times the rate of CO2/associated with animal agriculture. •Research on this from well respected universities, as well as the IPCC •Deforestation, biodiversity loss, ocean dead zones, depletion and extinction of fish, freshwater use, land use, Etc •Briefly, regenerative agriculture and its claims compared to the science •Lowest impact animal foods worse than worst plant-based •UN says animal agriculture creates more GHG emissions than all transportation • Ontario Dairy Farmer says 1 Ib of cheese requires 10000 L of water. •Nearly 50% of the fish caught in Canada are not the target species • 25% of global emissions are from food/ more than half of these are from Animal product Mitigation potential of plant-based diets: •IPCC report , Oxford, etc on this •decrease of 49% of food-related GHG emissions •Methane dissipates much more quickly than CO2, so we could create change quickly Close to home: • Canada is warming at twice the global rate. • Our carbon emissions since 1850 are higher than any other country. • All parts of Canada have experienced significant damage due to climate breakdown, with recent flooding in Manitoba and British Columbia top of the list. • Southern Ontario, already warmer than the rest of the country, will continue to experience extreme heat, and much of Ontario has already experienced flooding and fires and extreme weather attributable to climate breakdown. •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• 1 - 1 Outline of Mo's/ Plant-based Cities Movement presentation: Our ask: • We would like the City of Kitchener to take a stand and increase their plant-based purchases by at least 50% by the end of this year. The World is already taking action: • Kitchener and other cities across the world have declared a climate emergency/ are working toward decreasing their carbon footprint. 9C40 cities are working on climate initiatives, and many of these are working on plant-based initiatives. • Vancouver and other cities across the world have implemented plant-based strategies. • The Canada Food Guide recommends plant-based eating for our health and the planet. Costs to Cities of climate breakdown: • municipalities will spend more than five billion annually to mitigate the worst climate impacts. •Flooding /fire/drought/storms/ extreme weather/extreme temperatures •Health costs due to diseases related to the consumption of animal products Food and Water Security: • food and water shortages will increase even as our population increases • feeding and watering more than 70 billion farm animals; human starvation •Ontario Dairy Farmer says 1 Ib of cheese requires 10000 litres of water. 96800 litres of water needed for one pound of beef. • access to clean water is a problem in many places, including in communities in Canada Transitioning is Good Business: • plant-based food sales and businesses growing exponentially • young Canadians choosing plant-based more • Estimates of financial and emissions savings for Vancouver • Transitioning toward plant-based necessary Ways to implement: •Greener by default for conferences/events/festivals •Making burgers and hot dogs plant-based at neighborhood Festival, the Aud, etc •Using toolkits from Forward Food and the Physicians' Committee for Responsible Medicine, etc This is a difficult decision to make.
